Admin staff defrauding clinics of $80,000 or more: Avant
Fraud by medical practice employees is increasing, with some practices losing upwards of $80,000, a medical defence organisation says.
Avant is warning doctors and owners to use audits to detect possible staff fraud, which can be “quite sophisticated”.
Among the examples Avant cites is staff accepting a patient payment then changing the Medicare claim to a bulk-billed consultation, pocketing the difference.
“Because they also reconcile the EFTPOS at the end of the day, they can take any surplus cash,” Avant risk adviser Gail Wang wrote.
