‘After removing a rectum, I’d be in a valley with sheep and a couple of parrots’: Dr Freedman’s life in colour

In the first of the pandemic lockdowns Dr David Freedman was wondering how to fill his days, when a pair of eastern rosellas began nesting outside his studio window.
The recently retired surgeon mainly painted landscapes but decided to take up his brushes.
That painting in watercolour led to another and another and another until he had produced 270 avian artworks – at the rate of one a day.Â
It’s resulted in his stunning book capturing the rich and strange beauty of Australian birdlife, a book that also reunited Dr Freedman with his estranged stepbrother, Richard.
