AHPRA defends embrace of anti-Semitism definition in two-hour Royal Commission hearing

The watchdog's CEO said it was still deciding how the definition would be incorporated into the investigation process.

AHPRA will not ditch its contested anti-Semitism definition to guide investigations, but it has admitted it still has no clear idea how it will use the definition to assess doctors and other health workers accused of misconduct.

The watchdog has been under criticism since adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition in June, with doctor and nurse groups fearing it could be “weaponised” to silence health workers criticising Israel and the Gaza war.

The definition’s example include comparing contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis or claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a “racist endeavour”.

This week, AHPRA CEO Justin Untersteiner spent nearly two hours addressing the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion during a day of hearings focused on healthcare.
