AHPRA pledges to cut wait times for IMG paperwork Â

AHPRA says it is cutting down wait times for IMG paperwork, acknowledging that the drawn-out process is a contributor to Australia’s medical workforce crisis.
The system for IMGs gaining registration in Australia has been under increasing scrutiny, with claims it can drag out for years and, in some cases, cause IMGs to give up and return to their home country.
RACGP rural chair Dr Michael Clements said the wait times were even deterring practices from recruiting because of the risk doctors would change their minds or not meet all the criteria.
The process includes English language tests, background checks, verification of qualifications and further checks with the doctor’s prospective Australian employer.
