AHPRA promises to ‘stamp out’ dodgy practices amid spike in compassionate release of super

AHPRA CEO Justin Untersteiner is 'stunned' some practitioners are taking advantage of the early release scheme.

AHPRA and the Australian Taxation Office have vowed to end “inappropriate practices” by doctors and dentists who encourage patients to access their super early to pay for treatments.

Australians withdrew over $1.4 billion in super on compassionate grounds last financial year, with most of it spent on medical costs, such as dental, IVF and weight loss treatments.

The number of requests for compassionate release of super for medical reasons doubled in the past five years, reaching 93,500 in 2024/25, Australian Taxation Office (ATO) figures show.

Approvals for dental treatments went up nearly sixfold over five years, while approvals for other surgeries doubled, with IVF not far behind.
