How AHPRA approaches investigations into health practitioners subject to immediate action because of their alleged risk to patients is to be scrutinised again, amid ongoing concerns that unnecessary delays are causing distress and self-harm.

The National Health Practitioner Ombudsman announced it would launch an investigation, after reporting an increase in the number of complaints about AHPRA’s approach.

Immediate action has been taken against a number of high-profile doctors, including Dr Charlie Teo back in 2021.

In the case of Dr Teo it involved conditions on his registration limiting the types of surgery he could perform as well as additional supervision.
