AI scribes cut time spent note-taking by 10%, JAMA study suggests
Doctors who use AI scribes cut the time they spend note-taking by about 10%, a JAMA study suggests, based on metadata from doctors’ clinical software.
The US researchers looked at 1809 doctors who adopted AI scribes between 2023 and 2025, including 165 family physicians, as well as 6772 doctors who did not start using them.
After AI scribes were introduced, the adopters spent 13 fewer minutes using clinical software than the non-adopters per eight scheduled clinic hours , the study found.
And the adopters shaved off 16 minutes of note-taking compared with the non-adopters, from a baseline of about 2.7 hours of note-taking per eight scheduled clinic hours.
