Alert over rise in illegal drug imports to ‘treat’ COVID-19
Authorities are warning of a spike in illegal imports of hydroxychloroquine and a potentially dangerous Chinese medicine as desperate Australians appear to take coronavirus treatment into their own hands.
More than 26,000 tablets of hydroxychloroquine have been seized between the start of January and 21 June, according to the Australian Border Force (ABF).
The seized tablets have been referred to the TGA for assessment.
The ABF has also reported a massive jump in the detection of Ephedra sinica – a plant species often used in traditional Chinese medicine that some believe can ease COVID-19 symptoms
