Queensland to let GPs diagnose and treat ADHD without extra training
NSW and WA are also expanding GP prescribing rights, but unlike Queensland, they will require further training.
Every GP in Queensland will be free to diagnose and prescribe medications for ADHD in adults from 1 December.
Under the reforms announced on Saturday by Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls, GPs will require no additional training.
The move, described as a nation-leading first, is designed to increase access and lower cost barriers faced by patients — some of whom are paying private fees in excess of $1000 for diagnosis by a psychiatrist.
Queensland GPs already have the ability to diagnose and prescribe for patients with ADHD aged 4-17.
