‘Am I kidding myself?’: Aussie doctor to move to Belgium and become a philosopher

Dr Ken Barns had a long-term plan to stop working as a doctor when he hit 50.
It is finally happening, and he is ready — he is preparing to move to Belgium to start a master’s degree in philosophy.
He is currently in Leuven, the capital of Belgium’s Flemish region, for a short trip that has allowed him to look at apartments for when he moves.
“My wife and I both wanted the freedom to be able to say, ‘We get to 50, the kids leave home, then we reflect on if we want to keep doing what we’re doing, or change directions,’” says the ACRRM fellow, who mostly does emergency medicine.
