AMA ‘becoming activists’ over climate change, says Dr Tony Bartone

The AMA has formally declared climate change a “health emergency”, saying carbon reduction is now one of its top advocacy priorities.

The medical group says it accepts the scientific evidence on climate change, and its likely impact on human health and human wellbeing.

Warning of “severe consequences on vulnerable populations” across Australia and the Pacific, president Dr Tony Bartone said: “There is no doubt that climate change is a health emergency.

“Climate change will cause higher mortality and morbidity from heat stress. Climate change will cause injury and mortality from increasingly severe weather events.
