AMA WA accused of leadership failures as its vice-president quits over stoush with federal AMA

Dr Simon Torvaldsen said WA members want the two organisations to come back together.

AMA WA vice-president Dr Simon Torvaldsen has quit the board saying he is frustrated by the “glacial” actions of the state organisation to settle its ongoing dispute with the federal AMA.

A month ago, the federal AMA sent an email telling 5000 WA members that they had been expelled from the national organisation and were no longer represented by it.

It followed a refusal by AMA WA to hand over a million dollars in subscription money while it attempted to negotiate a new funding agreement.

Dr Torvaldsen, who is also the chair of the AMA Council of General Practice, said he “disagreed somewhat” with the direction the WA board had taken in recent months, claiming the split is destructive and the vast majority of AMA members in the state want to be represented by federal AMA.
