AMA will lose PSR veto powers: govt

The power, which the AMA has never used, was dubbed 'anachronistic' by a review.

The AMA will lose its power to overrule Federal Government decisions on who leads PSR under draft laws introduced to Parliament today.

It follows a review of Medicare compliance led by health economist Dr Pradeep Philip (PhD), which described the veto power as “anachronistic” despite the AMA never using it.

Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney told Parliament it was a potential conflict of interest.

“The government considers that this veto power is not consistent with public expectations and undermines confidence in the independence of the PSR as a regulator,” she said.
