NT pharmacists could soon prescribe S4 medicines for wounds, otitis media and impetigo under what the territory government is calling “a commonsense” proposal.

Last week, NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler launched a consultation on what conditions pharmacists should be allowed to treat with S4 medicines “in line with reforms across the nation”.

She gave the examples of acute nausea and vomiting, impetigo, mild to moderate allergic dermatitis and simple wounds or ear infections as candidates for pharmacist diagnosis and treatment.

“Expanding the scope of pharmacy services will make it convenient for patients to access medication and help alleviate pressure on primary care services and hospital EDs,” Ms Lawler said in a statement.
