Treatment with the antifungal itraconazole is associated with a significant reduction in vulvovaginal pain in women with negative fungus cultures and no other identifiable disease, reports a small US pilot study.

Results show that women taking the antifungal for vulvodynia experience over 60% reduction in pain.

The findings have prompted researchers to call for a randomised placebo-controlled confirmatory trial.

To research team, led by Dr Rodger Rothenberger of Penn State University College of Medicine in Pennsylvania, looked back at 106 women with vulvodynia who were treated with itraconazole.
