Should regularly using illicit drugs away from work automatically disqualify you from practising medicine?

Some argue that doctors using recreational drugs hurts the medical profession’s reputation, reflects poorly on their risk analysis and will affect their work eventually.

Others argue that doctors who do not work while impaired should be free to use drugs if they choose.

Professor Moira Sim, a GP and executive dean at Edith Cowan University, is on the panel list for AHPRA’s impairment review and professional standards committees, meaning she is asked to attend hearings and make decisions about doctors’ conduct.
