Are you ready if your next patient asks you about voluntary assisted dying?

Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) is now available for patients who fit legal and health criteria in all six states of Australia, and will be available in the ACT from 3 November 2025.

Go Gentle Australia released its State of VAD report on Monday. It presents a trans-Tasman ‘snapshot’ of VAD.

It shows that since 2019, more than 7200 terminally ill people in Australia and New Zealand have applied for VAD, and 3242 have died using a VAD substance, supported by more than 1200 health professionals.

VAD is now widely accepted as a safe end-of-life option, and polls show that more than 70% of Australians are firmly in favour of it.
