GPs can start administering Pfizer booster vaccines to adolescents aged 16 and 17, ATAGI declares.

It says the booster shots should be given three months after a primary vaccination course, with Pfizer’s Comirnaty vaccine the only brand approved for the age group.

There are about 580,000 16 and 17-year-olds in Australia, of which around 370,000 were fully vaccinated three months ago and meet the eligibility criteria for the booster shot.

Announcing its decision on Thursday, ATAGI acknowledged cases of COVID-19 had risen among teenagers since the emergence of Omicron compared with previous variants.
