Atherothrombosis causes fewer than half of MIs in women under 65: study
MI in younger women is far less likely to be atherothrombotic compared with younger men, a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found.
The study analysed individual patient records from 4116 MIs (indicated by a cardiac troponin T increase above the 99th percentile) in 2780 patients aged 18-65 from one county in Minnesota, US, spanning 2003 to 2018.Â
Women were significantly less likely to experience MI than men. However, the causes of the MI in women were more diverse.
Atherothrombosis was the most common single cause of MI in all participants under 65, but accounted for fewer than half of MIs for women compared with three-quarters of MIs for men.
