At-home fetal dopplers investigated following three stillbirths

The TGA says it could ban personal use of the devices by the public

Authorities have implicated at-home fetal dopplers in at least three stillbirths, triggering a TGA review of whether they should be banned.

The devices, which can cost $100 or more, are listed on the register of therapeutic goods but are widely available in retail shops, including Harvey Norman.

The TGA said it had received reports from obstetric services about three stillbirths and one early neonatal death where patients had been “falsely reassured” by the devices.

“While the deaths may not have been avoidable, the use of home fetal dopplers delayed the women’s presentation for timely review by providing false reassurance about their baby’s wellbeing,” the TGA told Australian Doctor.
