Aussie guidance on early infant exposure to egg linked to 18% fall in egg allergy: JAMA study
Australian guidelines promoting the early introduction of egg to infants reduced egg allergy rates by 18%, a study in JAMA Pediatrics suggests.
The study compared infants checked at their 12-month immunisation appointment between 2007 and 2011 with those checked between 2018 and 2019, finding a drop that the authors suggested was caused by guideline updates in 2016, which encouraged introducing infants to cooked egg at six months.
The drop was largely due to reduced rates in children with early eczema.
Earlier guidelines urged parents not to delay introducing allergenic foods, but did not specifically recommend giving them to infants at particular ages.
