Aussie researchers suggest targeting 7000 steps a day rather than 10,000

Beyond a certain point, the health gains from stepping it up are marginal, researchers say.

Is the milestone of 10,000 steps a day really the magic number for good health?

According to Australian researchers, the number is merely clever advertising from 1960s Japan.

Their meta-analysis, published in The Lancet Public Health last week, which examined 57 studies on daily step counts and health outcomes, suggested that 7000 steps a day was a better goal for the average person.

It found that hitting 7000 daily steps was associated with a 47% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared with 2000 steps a day.
