Australia looks set to break daily COVID-19 cases record

Australia is on track to break its daily coronavirus case record with surging infections and more deaths in NSW fuelling national concern.
The state recorded another new pandemic high of 633 new local cases and three deaths on Wednesday, taking the national toll to 970.
Health authorities are concerned transmission rates are not falling, putting the nation on a trajectory to eclipse its daily case record.
With 24 new cases in Melbourne and 22 in Canberra, there were 679 local infections nationwide on Wednesday, just 19 short of the worst day of last year’s second wave.
