Australia is “losing the public health battle” on nicotine vaping products, which need far tougher regulation and control, the AMA says.

The association issued the stark warning in a submission to the TGA on potential reforms to the regulation of nicotine vaping products (NVP).

The reforms are aimed at restricting access to the products by young people while supporting adults to access regulated products as a smoking cessation aid available through prescription.

Describing the current regulations as “too weak” the AMA also argues that the prescription of NVPs should be a last resort, due to a lack of evidence as an effective nicotine cessation tool.
