An 88-year-old Australian doctor held captive in West Africa for more than seven years has been released, the Federal Government says.

Dr Kenneth Elliott and his wife Jocelyn were kidnapped by terrorists in January 2016 near the border with Mali and Niger, where they were running a medical clinic.

Mrs Elliott was released soon after, but Dr Elliott remained captive.

On Friday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong announced that Dr Elliott had been released and reunited with his wife and their children.
