Back to the future? Restore state health watchdogs to ease AHPRA’s workload, Govt review says

AHPRA CEO Justin Untersteiner said the watchdog was prepared to follow the recommendations.

AHPRA would only investigate the most serious allegations against doctors under a proposal to ease its workload and ensure notifications are closed faster.

A Federal Government-commissioned review has called for state health watchdogs to deal with less serious complaints, with echoes of the pre-AHPRA era of state-based medical boards.

The review stressed that 85% of complaints to AHPRA resulted in no regulatory action and that many patients only wanted an apology, explanation or refund.

“Practitioners should not have a complaint sitting within the AHPRA notifications process if there is no prospect of it warranting disciplinary action, and when there are better, faster and more proportionate ways of managing the issues raised,” said the review, led by former NSW Health Care Complaints Commissioner Sue Dawson.
