Banned GP once admitted he was ‘not cut out for private practice’

An assessment of his care found that he was most comfortable with quick consults involving requests for repeat prescriptions
Ruling

A GP who once admitted he was not cut out for private general practice has been banned indefinitely following the death of a first-time patient he prescribed suboxone.

While the Brisbane GP was not found directly liable for the 34-year-old’s 2017 death, a tribunal ruled he failed to properly examine the man or investigate his drug history, including a recent opioid break.

He was also found guilty of professional misconduct for a range of other clinical failings.

The GP’s disciplinary history dated back to 1996, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard.
