Bariatric surgery benefits teens with severe obesity for up to 10 years: research

Adolescents undergoing gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy for obesity have durable reductions in BMI and type 2 diabetes, according to findings from the longest follow-up to date.
A prospective cohort study of US patients aged 13-19 found that bariatric surgery had greater health benefits compared with adults who underwent the procedure.
The Teen Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study followed 161 patients having gastric bypass and 99 having sleeve gastrectomy at a mean age of 17.
The teens had a mean BMI of 52kg/m2.
