Almost all young patients with diabetes who undergo bariatric surgery enter remission, researchers say, based on a study of 76 young people, including nine patients aged under 18.

The results suggest metabolic and bariatric surgery is safe and effective for patients aged 12-25, according to the research team, led by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in the US.

In their retrospective real-world study, 45 patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy, 28 underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and three underwent single anastomosis duodenal–ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S).

Three patients required reoperation within 30 days: one with staple line bleeding, one with cholecystitis and one with SADI-S duodenal stump leak with bilious peritonitis.
