‘Big emergency’: Overwhelmed sexual health doctors turning away hundreds of patients a week
Rising STI cases are forcing sexual health doctors to reject thousands of patients a year, a leading GP says.
Last year, almost 56,000 consultations — roughly 200 a day — took place at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Victoria’s only public clinic.
“We will usually triage out about 30%,” its director, GP Professor Jason Ong, told AusDoc.
“But on days like today, nearly half need to be triaged out.”
