‘Bleeding through their scrubs’: junior doctor tackles colleagues’ period woes
After hearing stories of other junior female doctors bleeding through scrubs or begging colleagues for a tampon or pad because they had no time to buy products, Dr Josie Cheetham decided to act.
She has set up a sanitary protection on site (SOS) scheme in her Welsh hospital to provide emergency access to pads and tampons during shifts that often last 13 hours with limited breaks, the BMJ reports.
Dr Cheetham has forked out $176 (£94) to buy airtight boxes and fill them with tampons, pads and panty liners.
The containers are then placed in the junior doctors’ toilets and advertised through posters, email and WhatsApp.
