Blood type linked to risk of early-onset stroke, study shows

A large study has teased out relationships between genetic clotting tendency and blood types

Blood type might be an indicator of risk for stroke at an early age, a meta-analysis suggests.

An international consortium of researchers has found that people with type A blood have 16% higher odds of experiencing early stroke — before the age of 60 — than those with other blood types.

In addition, people with blood type O have a 12% lower risk of any stroke and type B blood is associated with increased risk of both early and late stroke.

The findings come from a meta-analysis of 48 genome-wide association studies involving 17,000 ischaemic stroke cases and 599,000 non-stroke controls.
