Bonded doctors told ‘bad luck’ on medical school debt offer

Dr David Gillespie says a new scheme is meant to avoid some flaws of the Bonded Medical Program, which will continue to be offered

The Federal Government won’t stop offering bonded medical places, with participants told they are all still required to complete their full return of service.

It comes after Dr David Gillespie announced the government would begin wiping out remaining medical school debts from next year for any doctors willing to work rurally as GPs.

Unlike the Bonded Medical Program, there will be no long-term commitments, with doctors free to leave at any time without being banned from Medicare.

But there would also be no jumping across for the roughly 12,000 doctors and medical students who were already committed with bonded places, Dr Gillespie said.
