Boy died of scurvy after taking ‘multivitamin’ that contained no vitamin C, coroner finds

The boy's paediatrician was critical of an iron-containing multivitamin being allowed on the market when it contained no vitamin C.

A six-year-old died from complications linked to scurvy after doctors had advised his parents to give him a multivitamin — only for it to later emerge that the alleged multivitamin they used contained no vitamin C.

Connor Dean, who had trisomy 21, had developed increasingly restricted eating from around the age of five, with his diet eventually consisting mainly of white bread, sausage, chocolate and custard.

His paediatrician became concerned in May 2023 after he gained just 300g over 11 months and was reportedly no longer eating fruit or vegetables.

Blood tests revealed deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A and eventually vitamin D.
