Brain infarction traced to wasp sting to the face in unusual case

Indian doctors warn that wasp venom can trigger neurological complications.

A man stung by a wasp had to contend not only with anaphylaxis but also an unusual thalamic infarction, doctors in India report.

The team at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi said the case highlighted the “multifaceted impact” of hymenoptera venom, which has both inflammatory and thrombogenic properties.

Their patient, in his 40s, presented to ED with acute-onset respiratory distress and facial swelling that emerged two hours after a wasp sting to the face.

He was given supplemental oxygen as well as IV adrenaline and antihistamines.
