MRI-based test predicts most dementia cases almost a decade before onset: study
Doctors may be able to predict future dementia risk nearly a decade before clinical diagnosis using functional MRI, say international researchers.
The team, including Associate Professor Adeel Razi from Monash University in Melbourne, has developed a new method for predicting dementia with over 80% accuracy.
Unlike current methods such as memory tests or measurements of brain matter, their predictive test uses functional MRI (fMRI) data to detect changes in the brain’s ‘default mode network’.
This network connects regions of the brain to perform specific cognitive functions and is the first neural network to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease, according to the researchers.
