Difficulty breathing is more common than chest pain prior to cardiac arrest, yet patients with this symptom are less likely to receive emergency help and more likely to die, a study shows.

The Danish research suggests greater awareness of breathing as a flag for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest may improve early intervention, cardiology research scholar Filip Gnesin told the ESC Congress 2021.

Mr Gnesin, from Nordsjaellands Hospital in Hillerød, Denmark, and his team evaluated emergency calls for 481 patients out of some 4070 in the Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest between 2016 and 2018.
