Bulk-billing rebates not enough? Second bailout for clinic caring for struggling patients
Activists say they were ready to occupy cohealth's clinics — and won't be putting their foot off the gas.
Cohealth, the troubled Medicare-funded health centre with some 60 doctors and nurses, will survive for another year, with governments stepping in to provide another $1.5 million bailout.
Last year, cohealth announced it would have to shut down three health clinics in inner Melbourne because of spiralling costs.
At the time, it had been providing bulk-billed care to some 12,000 marginalised patients, including those sleeping rough and in emergency accommodation.
Both state and federal governments eventually offered $1.5 million to keep the doors open.
