Calls to ditch ‘unnecessary’ clinical assessment for IMGs to work in general practice
A parliamentary petition is demanding a reduction in the clinical assessment of IMGs before they are allowed to work under supervision as GPs.
With claims that some are waiting up to a year to start jobs because of the time it takes to arrange their mandatory PESCI interviews, those behind the campaign are calling for the assessment to be scrapped for certain candidates.
The assessment is used to identify the IMG’s suitability to work under limited registration, based on their specific position as a GP.
It typically lasts 60-90 minutes, costs at least $2000 and involves a panel of doctors reviewing the IMG’s resume followed by a roleplay or discussion around five potential clinical scenarios.
