Cancer, not CVD, is the biggest killer of patients with diabetes

Prevention efforts need to be refocussed to cut excess mortality still associated with diabetes, researchers say

Cancer has overtaken vascular diseases as the leading cause of deaths in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, a large database study has found.

The UK findings, which are consistent with Australian data on mortality trends, could prompt a shift in clinical and preventative efforts, the researchers say.

They have also shown cancers are the leading contributor to the difference in death rates between people who have diabetes and those without diabetes.

The Imperial College London-led team compared primary care data from 314,000 age- and sex-matched pairs of patients with and without diabetes.
