Cardiologist ordered to repay $1.9 million in Medicare rebates

Meanwhile, a GP was cleared after appearing to breach the 30/20 rule.

A cardiologist will repay $1.9 million in rebates after a committee found they had inappropriately billed initial attendance, multichannel ECG and stress echo Medicare items.

The cardiologist was also banned from billing the MBS for a year, according to the Professional Services Review (PSR) decision, handed down in June and revealed last month.

For the initial consultations, the cardiologist had claimed MBS item 110, which has a current schedule fee of $178.80.

The PSR said the consultations included inadequate examinations and “superficial” assessments that “did not outline a focused history relating to the presenting complaint”.
