Children with poorly controlled asthma ‘falling through cracks in care’

The rate of hospital readmissions is climbing, Australian researchers warn

Largely preventable hospital readmissions among children with asthma suggest shortfalls in GP and hospital care, paediatricians say.

Their research showed a third of children admitted to Victorian hospitals with asthma were readmitted within 12 months, increasing from the one-in-five paediatric asthma readmissions in a previous study a decade ago.

“Our study highlighted gaps in children’s asthma care,” said lead author Dr Katherine Chen, from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne.

Dr Chen and colleagues analysed data from 767 children, aged 3-18, who had a diagnosis of asthma and were admitted to one of three hospitals in Victoria between 2017 and 2018.
