‘Unaware it was political’: College presidents apologise over Labor fundraiser

Dr Astha Tomar and Dr Nisha Khot said they were unaware that a speaking event they were to attend was a fundraiser for the Victorian Labor Party.

The college presidents for psychiatry and O&G have cancelled their planned appearances at a fundraiser for a Labor candidate in Victoria’s upcoming election.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) president Dr Astha Tomar and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) president Dr Nisha Khot both say they had not known the event was a party fundraiser and withdrew once they realised.

The 30 July event was presented as a dinner and conversation hosted by Labor candidate Mikaela Stafrace, with the two presidents discussing social issues in healthcare and their experiences as female Indian doctors.

However, the online description noted that tickets “included a donation component” supporting the Victorian Labor Government’s campaign for re-election in November.
