Colorectal cancer cases found after surgeon’s incomplete colonoscopies triggered mass recall

Seven people have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer after a surgeon performed incomplete colonoscopies.

Seven people have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer after more than 1000 repeat colonoscopies were performed on patients believed to have had incomplete procedures under surgeon Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt.

Patients were recalled following a clinical review which revealed she had not viewed the entire bowel during the colonoscopies, performed between 2018 and 2022.

“The types of issues we identified as part of the clinical investigation include Dr Schmidt taking insufficient time to complete the procedure as well as other issues related to thoroughness,” Safer Care Victoria said in a statement back in January.

The independent clinical review was commissioned by Safer Care Victoria and Albury Wodonga Health.
