A trend to DIY and essential oil-based sunscreens is concerning because their claimed SPF ratings are not approved by regulatory authorities, an honorary dermatology registrar says.

He’s calling on health professionals to be more proactive in warning patients about the risk of using shared recipes and so-called ‘natural’ alternatives to commercial sunscreens, often promoted through social media platforms.
