Australia’s first breast density guidance for GPs urges them to consider extra screening with MRI or other modalities for women with dense breasts based on their family history risk category.

BreastScreen services in most states already include information on breast density in patients’ mammogram results and encourage women with dense breasts to consult a GP.

The remaining jurisdictions — Queensland, NT and the ACT — will likely follow within a few years.

The Federal Government has now published new guidance for GPs, including mammogram images demonstrating different levels of fibroglandular tissue according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS).
