Could statins prevent cholecystectomy post weight-loss surgery?
Preoperative statins may halve the risk of patients requiring a cholecystectomy after bariatric surgery, a study suggests.
Dutch researchers looked at the rate of cholecystectomy at two years post-primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in 1780 patients.
They found that more than 13% of patients had had their gallbladder removed within two years.
Reductions in total weight loss were linked to a higher risk of cholecystectomy, as were known risk factors, such as being female and being Caucasian — both of which doubled the risk.
