Crackdown on sports supplements in wake of deaths

From November, the TGA will regulate the supplements in the same way it does medications

Sports supplements are to be classed as medicines instead of foods following a number of high-profile deaths, says Australia’s drug watchdog.

The TGA announced the crackdown last week after years of inquiry into the safety of such supplements

From 30 November any sports supplement containing “higher risk ingredients” that make therapeutic claims can only be advertised if they are registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

It means product sponsors will have to provide evidence that their product is safe and effective.
