‘Creeping towards Trump’s America’: Doctor turned MP slams govt for ignoring TGA rulings against pharmacy contraceptives

Defying the TGA to let pharmacists initiate oral contraceptives represents a Trump-like move against clinical expertise, says MP and former GP Dr Amanda Cohn.

The NSW Government announced last month it would let pharmacists with extra training initiate the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) from 1 June despite the TGA repeatedly rejecting bids to make the OCP an S3 medicine, available in pharmacies without a script.

On Wednesday, as government MPs used a parliamentary motion to extol the policy, Dr Cohn hit back, saying it was “a sorry state of affairs for the health system that this initiative is being celebrated”.

“It is a frightening creep towards a Donald Trump US approach to healthcare,” said Dr Cohn, the NSW Greens health spokeswoman.
