Crisis summit: AMA says patient enrolment will help fix GP woes

The association’s new seven-point plan to ‘modernise Medicare’ also reiterates the need for a new item number for longer consults

The AMA has renewed its push for voluntary patient enrolment as part of its campaign to ‘modernise Medicare’ and reduce pressure on GPs.

Its seven-point plan comes ahead of the RACGP’s General Practice Crisis Summit in Canberra today.

It argues moving to a system of enrolment, as recommended by the MBS Review Taskforce, would encourage long-term relationships.

The reform was considered a dead duck after being put on hold by the Morrison Government. But a new task force has been set up to advise the current government, with a new scheme expected next year.
